Another Muslim Brotherhood Mosque Targeted in Canada

Two mosques in Canada have been targeted for actions in the last three weeks.  Both of them have significant and open ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.

On 29 January 2017, a Quebec City mosque was attacked in a hail of gunfire which killed 6 people.  Another 19 were wounded or injured and 17 children were left without their fathers.  It is not yet clear if the assailant will be charged with terrorism.  For questions surrounding the possible terrorism charges see here. The mosque had been the target of a pamphlet distributed around its neighborhood claiming it was a Muslim Brotherhood mosque, a claim for which there is much justification.  For more on the pamphlet and the press articles surrounding it, see here.

On 17 February 2017, a small protest was held at the Dundas Street Mosque in Toronto.  The mosque has numerous publicly known ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and its current Imam formerly worked for Yusef Qaradawi, the spiritual guide and inspirational leader for the Muslim Brotherhood.

Qaradawi is currently wanted on an Interpol Red Notice and lives in the safe haven of Qatar.
Among the clearest indicators of Muslim Brotherhood influence is the sign on the mosque itself.  It clearly identifies itself as a Muslim Association of Canada (MAC) mosque.  The MAC is one of only two organizations in the world outside of Egypt that openly identifies itself as adherents of the Muslim Brotherhood.  The other is HAMAS, which states in Article Two of its charter that it is the Muslim Brotherhood in Palestine.  MAC websites refer to their own history and state:

It’s modern roots can be traced to the vigorous intellectual revivalist effort that took hold in Muslim societies starting in the early twentieth century. This revival aimed at reconciling faith with the challenges of modernity and providing a clear articulation of balance and moderation in understanding Islam. In the Arab world, this revival culminated in the writings of the late Imam Hassan Al-Banna and the movement of the Society of Muslim Brothers (commonly known as the Muslim Brotherhood).

Dr. El-Tantawy Attia is a senior leader at Masjid Toronto (Dundas Street) and the Muslim Association of Canada.  He made his views quite clear when he emphatically told the pressHere, we follow the teachings of the Muslim Brotherhood.”   Of note, Dr Attia’s daughter is Sarah Attia.  She is the former Vice President of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Muslim Students Association and was a speaker at May 18-19, 2002 – 28th Annual Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) Canada Convention in Toronto.  The Muslim Student Association was founded by adherents of the Muslim Brotherhood.  Sarah Attia’s husband is Khaled Al-Qazzaz. According to his own Twitter account, he was working in Egypt as “Secretary on Foreign Relations, Office of the President Politics: Freedom & Justice Party.” The president in question was Dr. Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood’s president of Egypt in 2012 and 2013.
As noted above, the mosque’s Imam formerly worked for Yousef Qaradawi – the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Imam is also a member of the International Union for Muslim Scholars (IUMS) headed by Qaradawi.  Imam Dr. Wael Shihab advocates that we should study Yusuf Al-Qaradawi’s encyclopedic book “Fiqh of Jihad” (Jurisprudence of Jihad). This book advocates that homosexuality is evil and it is succumbing to the temptations of the Satan.  Transgendered people should return to their original gender and the hands should be chopped off thieves.  Qaradawi also endorses suicide bombings.
